Fossil Fuels

Coal, Petroleum (Oil), and Natural Gas are the three types of fossil fuels which have been used as energy sources for human activity on Earth. These fuels are located and mined/pumped out of the ground. They were created from deposits of dead organisms buried in the ground and subjected to the heat and pressure of the Earth over geological time. This biological/geological activity is still ongoing, but the rate of fossil fuel creation is far outstripped by the rate of fossil fuel use.
