    Position Paper
In ten years, I believe that there will be new technology targeted at reducing our carbon footprint. Although my family has never been completely green, we have already made some small adjustments in our lifestyle to help fight global climate change. For example, my mom switched all of our light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs. We have also tried to buy low emission vehicles. Because of this, I believe that in ten years my family will at least have green household appliances. My parents will probably sell one of their four cars and try to buy the most environmentally friendly vehicle available, depending on the status of the economy. However, if the political world impedes the growth of eco-friendly technology, I do not think that my family will make any dramatic sacrifices to reduce their carbon footprint. Because people are so used to the luxury of motor vehicles, I do not think that many people will try to walk or bike more if environmentally friendly cars are not undergoing mass production. For example, a number of men in my town could easily walk to and from the train station to get to work. However, many of them will jump in their SUVs so they can save a little time. I also believe that in ten years, there will be many more politicians who stress the importance of solving the global climate change crisis and my family will definitely have their support. If politicians have successfully created numerous green collar jobs, I think men and women, such as my parents, would be willing to join a growing industry. If the oil companies lost numbers, it would be a lot easier for politicians to pass laws that help reduce our carbon footprint.
I would like to see our country move towards becoming a green nation at a faster pace. Ideally, I would like to see many wealthy people in my town switch from their position at oil companies to green collar jobs. I would want the teenagers in Greenwich to stop driving their escalades simply to go to town and to try and use public transportation or their own two feet. I would like to see my family sell at least two of our cars when all of us are in college. I hope that we would also try to buy hybrid cars or the current green vechile of the time to reduce our carbon footprint. I also hope that all of our household appliances were carbon neutral and that we would have solar panels on our roof. Every member of my family could walk or bike to almost every place they travel to daily.

    What Should We Do?

March, 2009: "Not long ago, my wife, PJ, and I tried a new diet—not to lose a little weight but to answer a nagging question about climate change. Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, and that the consequences could be severe if we don't keep reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere. But what can we do about it as individuals? And as emissions from China, India, and other developing nations skyrocket, will our efforts really make any difference?"
